Show filters sorted in alphabetical order#355

Currently the filters do not appear sorted in alphabetical order. Therefore it make it difficult to quickly find the ‘tag’ to filter on.

Hi Jaewoo, the filters (aka field options) appear in the order they are stored within the field. To change the order, you can move them with drag & drop:

. Let me know if this helps!

HI Daniel, thanks for the video recording! But I’m aware of the drag & drop to change order capability within the individual fields. This comment however is related to the filters button on the board home page.

(See attached image) See that Notifications should come after New Post if it was in alphabetical order.

Thanks, Jaewoo. What I wanted to say with my previous comment is that the filter order is the same as within a field. Changing the order in a field will also change the order in the board home page’s filters, which means you can customize how the filters appear.

Should, in your opinion, all filters be sorted alphabetically regardless of their “type”? For example, statuses are currently always at the end of the list.

Hi Daniel, yes I think that all filters should be sorted alphabetically regardless of their type. Right now, it seems that the alphabetical sort is within the field in which it was entered in. With the way its currently implemented I would see a flat list like this:

Apple
Banana
Cherry
Architect
Designer
Developer

The problem is as a user, it makes it difficult to find the filter i want when its not in alphabetical order. How would I have known that Designer would be listed after Architect and not Cherry? Its not logically sorted right now. Its sorted for the benefit of the admin user not the end user who is providing the feedback & who is trying to filter existing feedback by a specific filter. The filters would be more predictable & easier to scan like this:

Apple
Architect
Banana
Cherry
Designer
Developer

However, if the current sort order is to be kept, i think a simple heading could greatly help the user scan the list of filters, so that they know to look past the fruits filters and go to the job title field filters.

-Fruits Field-
Apple
Banana
Cherry
-Job Title Field-
Architect
Designer
Developer

Thanks for the great input, Jaewoo. Headings can also help when filters are not self-explanatory enough. For example:

high
medium
low

vs.

-Priority-
high
medium
low

A Priority field is also a good example of why an alphabetical order is not always optimal. There are also cases where a reverse alphabetical or “time-based” order is preferred (e.g., releases where the newest version is at the top, statuses sorted by progression).

Adding a heading and keeping the custom sort capability can be a viable alternative to keep it flexible and make the filter list more predictable.

Thanks again!
